Business Feature Friday – Vortex Martial Arts | News
When Scott and Tracy Maczuga moved to Texas from Michigan in 2008, Liberty Hill was the first place they called home. Now, years later, they’ve planted even deeper roots in the community by bringing Vortex Martial Arts, a school dedicated to self-defense, character development, and family values.
“We’re absolutely grateful to be in this community, and we’re committed to serving it,” said Scott Maczuga, who has been a martial artist for 36 years and has traveled the world as a speaker on the discipline.
On Oct. 1, Vortex Martial Arts officially opened its doors at 14745 Hwy 29 in Liberty Hill, welcoming students of all ages and skill levels. The academy isn’t just another martial arts school –it stands apart by blending a variety of disciplines, including modern Japanese karate, Thai boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling and Krav Maga. The curriculum is built on self-defense first, with sport as a secondary focus.
Maczuga explains that Vortex Martial Arts fills a niche market in the industry.
“Traditional martial arts schools often focus on either character development or sport,” he said. “On the other hand, self-defense schools may prioritize techniques without the values component. We combine both – teaching the highest level of self-defense while instilling strong character development and family values.”
Vortex offers a leadership program, acrobatics (Kicks & Tricks), an after-school program and a summer camp, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded experience. While the academy is Christian-owned, students of all backgrounds are welcome.
One of Maczuga’s most memorable moments happened just recently when a visitor from Ohio who had traveled to Austin for business purposefully sought him out and stopped by his office.
“He told me that his daughter had trained with us years ago and that I had a huge impact on her life,” said Maczuga. “He purposefully sought me out to let me know how our program helped shape her foundation and set her up for success.”
It’s moments like these that reinforce the importance of what Vortex Martial Arts is doing – not just teaching martial arts, but helping students build confidence, discipline and resilience.
Scott and Tracy are no strangers to the Liberty Hill area and frequently visit local schools to connect with the community. They also offer free trial classes and tours for anyone interested in seeing what Vortex Martial Arts is all about.
Unlike many business owners who struggle with city regulations, Maczuga describes the experience of opening Vortex as refreshingly smooth.
“The city was extremely helpful and incredibly easy to work with,” he said. “It was a delightful experience.”
As for the future, Maczuga is already looking toward expansion.
“We’re always looking for ways to grow,” he said. “We’re considering Jarrell and other surrounding areas – even further out, if possible.”
For those dreaming of starting their own business, Maczuga offers some straightforward advice.
“Business ownership isn’t for everyone,” he said. “Everybody wants a BMW, but few are willing to work for it. Being an entrepreneur means putting in long hours and truly committing. If you have a dream, follow it – but understand it takes hard work, especially if your goal is to serve and build others up.”
To celebrate their opening, Vortex is offering 50 percent off the first month of training for anyone who mentions this article.
