Pyramid Engineering of Altoona has been providing complete design services through all phases of construction for 25 years.
“I can’t believe how fast it went to build a client base. Since we started we have been busy, even during COVID we slowed down just a little but not much,” said Thomas Heasley, who founded the business with partners Eric Haugh and John Solarczyk in a home in 2000 before moving to their 300 Fifth Ave. location in 2003.
The business started with those three and today has a staff of six.
As a full-service consulting firm, the principals are committed to meeting the established schedules and budgets as well as producing efficient designs that result in reliable system operation. From preliminary planning to final design and construction inspection, the firm has the professional staff to meet almost every need of its clients.
“We design mechanical and electrical systems for building construction. We also do building feasibility studies for buildings, site electrical work. We do a lot of sports facilities for lighting. We did Mansion Park and we have done sports lighting projects all across the state,” Heasley said.
“Our goal as professional engineers has always been to provide our clients with the most responsive and comprehensive services possible. Our areas of expertise complement each other, allowing us to complete a project from start to finish entirely in-house. We know we have a reputation for excellence to maintain, which translates into a commitment to work harder than others,” the website states.
Heasley said Pyramid has done more than 1,900 projects over the years, with major projects typically education and healthcare facilities across the state. Those projects range from classroom renovations to major campus construction.
Most of the work is done in central and western Pennsylvania but “we get into northern West Virginia and Maryland, a little bit in Ohio and we have done two projects in Texas,” Heasley said.
Pyramid’s clients include architects and contractors for electrical and mechanical systems.
“In about 80 percent of our projects, the client is the architect,” Heasley said.
One of those clients is KTH Architects, DuBois.
Pyramid Engineering has been a very reliable and economical consultant for the company since the early 2000s, said Ethan J. Hine, registered architect/principal.
“I have worked closely with Pyramid Engineering on a variety of project sizes and types, including health care, airport terminals, aircraft hangars, banks, municipal buildings and Multi-family housing projects,” Hine said. “The principals at Pyramid Engineering have hands-on knowledge of each project detail and they are available and respond quickly to our project needs and questions.”
Pyramid worked under the direction of local architect David Albright to certify the mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings for Sugar Run Brewing Company of Duncansville.
“A brewery is a cool project and Sugar Run Brewing Company was happy to work with Pyramid. In fact, years after the fit out, everything is working as designed,” said owner Matt Krueger.
Heasley said Pyramid has survived by providing quality service.
“We are not actively trying to expand our client base, we have a lot of repeat clients, they wouldn’t call us back if we weren’t providing good service for them,” Heasley said.
Heasley is optimistic about the future of the business.
“We are very busy now and there is a lot on the horizon, we are a little concerned about how the tariffs will impact construction, there has been 25 percent added to the equipment costs. We are planning on hiring some young engineers but not expanding our office,” Heasley said.
