To promote ‘ease of living’, the urban development department will develop 57 municipalities into smart cities. These municipalities, primarily at the district headquarters, will be equipped with digital systems to streamline administrative functions, ensuring transparency and efficiency through CCTV surveillance integrated with command and control centres, AI-driven civic service management, chatbot-based citizen interaction, and integrated cowshed management systems.

The department has already developed 17 smart cities in line with this vision. The government allocated a budget of ₹40,000 crore for this project, with ₹145 crore already sanctioned as initial funding.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said: ‘Our goal is to make Uttar Pradesh a model state of urban development. Through these 57 smart municipalities, we are strengthening infrastructure and promoting inclusive and sustainable growth.’

These smart municipalities will incorporate state-of-the-art features guided by the principles of digital governance, smart physical and urban infrastructure, sustainable development, and improved citizen services. The initiative will not just enhance civic amenities, but also promote local economies through increased investment, tourism, job creation and environmental protection.

Once developed as smart, these municipalities will offer advanced civic amenities and will have measures to control air, water, and noise pollution, in addition to water logging solutions and uninterrupted power and water supply systems.

Other facilities that will be available in these municipalities include smart parking, digital traffic and lighting management, and designated vending zones for street vendors. Among infrastructure development, the department will provide CC roads, junction redesign, digital libraries, exhibition centres, and auditoriums.
