Builders causing delays in Mumbai’s redevelopment will face consequences: Piyush Goyal, ET RealEstate
Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday issued a stern warning that builders and officials causing delays or disruptions in redevelopment projects in the country’s financial capital Mumbai will face stringent consequences, including blacklisting and potential imprisonment.
‘True development is not just about GDP figures. It begins with ensuring every citizen has a safe, permanent and dignified home. Until the last person in society lives with security and self-respect, our work remains incomplete,’ he said while handing over new homes to around 150 families under a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme in Mumbai’s Kandivali suburb.
He acknowledged the timely and quality completion of this specific project by the developer but made it clear that the government will not tolerate negligence, corruption, or delays in SRA redevelopment.
‘Builders who abandon projects, stop rent payments or deliver substandard work will be blacklisted. In severe cases, they may face imprisonment. I also demand action against government officials who collude with such builders,’ Goyal said.
The minister insisted that beneficiaries must have the right to choose their developer, with no political or administrative interference, and that the SRA process must be fully transparent.
