Ernst celebrates Malvern business’ rebirth | News
(Malvern) — Kudos continue to pour in to a Mills County business that came back from the ashes.
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst presented Mulholland Grocery with one of her Small Business of Week Awards in a visit to Malvern Friday morning. Originally announced in late March, Ernst tells KMA News she waited until now to present the award in order to honor the business on its 150th anniversary.
“Family owned and operated, and an incredible business,” said Ernst. “What they give back to the community. They’re so widely respected across Mills County, Montgomery County–all around the surrounding areas. When they lost their business to the fire a few years back, the implications really hit hard for so many families. We’re really glad they’re back in full force.”
Mulholland’s business reopened in a new facility in December, three years after a fire destroyed the original business. The Red Oak Republican says the Mulholland’s rebirth is a testament to perseverance after the devastating fire.
“It shows me how much they are needed in this community,” said Ernst, “and their commitment to the community to continue on here. A lot of people would have said, ‘the heck with it. I’m going to pack up and move on.’ But, not Tom. Not Tom and his employees. They decided to keep on going, and support the community. So, again, a true testament to Tom and to everyone that has pitched in and supported Mulholland Grocery.”
Mulholland says the award is special for more than one reason.
“It means even more, since we’re right now at the end of National Small Business Week,” said Mulholland. “Receiving this at this time means a lot to me. Just being recognized for being here, and the importance of a small business like this to the entire surrounding area does mean a lot to me–and I appreciate it.”
Mulholland hopes his business is an example to all small businesses facing hardship, and struggling to stay alive.
“Four years ago yesterday (Thursday), I was on stage in Washington, D.C. with some other small business owners facing tragedy–and we were talking about coming back from that,” he said. “The one thing I said that really resonated with everybody is, ‘maybe I’m too dumb to quit.’ You have to decide what’s important to you, and what means the most to you. To me, it’s this community.”
As for the future, Mulholland says he’s laying the groundwork for someone to take over the business, and continue serving Malvern and surrounding communities. Ernst’s Small Business of the Week awards are part of her effort to recognize businesses in Iowa’s 99 counties.
