CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh administration is planning to demolish two colonies – Sanjay Colony, Industrial Area-I, and Janta Colony, Sector 25.

“Plans are afoot for the demolition of Sanjay Colony and Janta Colony. Sanjay Colony is spread over 6 acres, and Janta Colony over 10 acres. Sanjay Colony is planned to be first vacated and then demolished by the end of this month. Later, the demolition of Janta Colony will be taken up,” said a UT official.

The official added that the move is in conformity with the administration’s aim to make the city slum-free. “The high court directed the administration to hear the submissions of the colony dwellers before taking any action. The administration has followed the directions, and now the demolition drive will be conducted as per law. The directions came before the start of the demolition drive against Janta Colony,” said the official.

Notably, residents of Sanjay Colony and Janta Colony filed a petition before the high court in 2022, seeking to quash the notice issued by the administration and restrain its authorities from carrying on the eviction of petitioners from their jhuggis.

Earlier this year, the administration held hearings with all the affected persons of the two colonies. There are more than 4,000 shanties in both colonies. Janta Colony is the last major slum area in the city, spread over 10 acres of land, estimated to be priced at Rs 350 crore.

In a major demolition drive in 2022, the administration demolished Colony No. 4, which was spread over 65 acres.
